About this publication
TOIREKURABE is a review of café toilets in Tokyo, and therefore a review of cafés. The publication holds that a café that cannot maintain its restroom to a standard cannot be trusted with a flat white. This position has not been popular. It has, however, been consistent.
The scoring system
Each match pits two cafés against one another. Five categories are scored on a 10-point scale, yielding a maximum of 50 points per contender:
Methodology
Each facility is visited once, unannounced. Notes are taken on paper. The reviewing panel consists of one person, whose qualifications are not disclosed and whose biases are disclosed only through the scores. No café has been informed of a visit in advance. Several have been informed after.
Corrections
Protests may be filed. They will not be read. In the event that a score is arithmetically incorrect, the publication will issue a correction with the same solemnity with which it issued the original error. No other form of correction is recognised. The numbers are final.
